What They Want: Gifts for Men

Men are tough to shop for. It's a widely known phenomenon that is true for just about every man. At least, in my family it is always a struggle to find something meaningful and fun that the male recipient will enjoy and appreciate. Like lots of families, we pick names at Christmastime to guide our gift giving. I have found, over the years, that fashionable men and those who are image conscious appreciate classic gifts while the more eccentric male members of my family enjoy something just a tad unusual.

Fashion accessories might seem like a woman centric gift, but if the man on your gift list likes looking sharp, a nice tie can truly be the perfect gift. Other items you can consider along these lines include cuff links and wristwatches. How you decide which type whether than what to give your recipient depends on their personal preference and taste.

For teenagers, I have plenty of younger cousins who are very aware of their clothes, hair and appearance in general. Last year, I picked out and purchased brightly colored shoelaces that I'd seen his friends. Shoelaces might not seem like much, but they can cost a pretty penny to a teenager and move his style from average to hip just like that.

Men, it is no secret, like to eat. Furthermore, men like to eat strange foods. While women usually think of consuming food as an enjoyable and pleasant experience, there are plenty of men who like their meal best when it can be dressed up with something strange. Check out options like beer mustard for food lovers.

Technology is always a great choice for men. Make sure you check in with their immediate family and even friends to verify that they do not have what you are planning to buy. You can also ask what he has his eye on.

This actually brings up a good point: ask the women! In my family, when we shop for my cousin Austin we ask his mom what it is he wants so we can make sure to get him something he will enjoy. In fact, this happens with a lot of the men who are part of the gift giving simply because they are so hard to buy for!

Older men aren't as picky, at least in my family. My grandpa, for example, participates in the gift swap simply because it is a tradition and spreads the joy. He is not, from what I know, particularly interested in receiving the perfect gift.

Whoever is on your list and whatever the occasion, thinking up good gift ideas for men can be hard. Unlike women, bath salts and a nice scarf don't quite cut it. Ask around if you need guidance, try to put yourself in their shoes and, most of all, give the gift of giving from your heart and all will be well.
