Most of us are guilty of procrastinating, at least sometimes. There are always other things you could be doing. Since procrastination is one of those things that are hard to stop completely, maybe we can just focus on curbing it a little. Even if you promptly take care of something really important, are there not things that you are delaying taking care of?
When we procrastinate, we unknowingly try to avoid depressing feelings and emotions that can lead to feeling blue. This brings only temporarily relief and the next day when you awaken, no little fairy has done the work for you and the emotional stress of not completing your project returns. So, what to do?
Find a way to organize yourself. Now don't procrastinate on this also. Make lists but keep it simple and realistic. Include both small and the large things to do on this list. Remember that even small things done are accomplishments.
Check off tasks that are taken care of. It's fun to watch your list grow shorter. You will probably be quite surprised at how good this can make you feel, and you will feel motivated to do more. You might find classes on organization beneficial.
Prioritize your lists. You might find that some of the most important tasks are not exactly fun. What do you think you should do first, clean a kitchen drawer or pay a bill that can penalize you if you are late making the payment? Keeping up with deadlines helps your morale and saves you money.
Take it easy and divide the bulk of your tasks into smaller blocks. Before you know it the whole pie has been eaten. The first step leads to walking great distances. The same approach applies to getting things done. By the yard it's hard, but by the inch it's a cinch.
Keep your expectation down to an acceptable level. If a particularly big task worries you, take care of small things that can make accomplishing the big task easier. If you do that, the big task will suddenly appear easier.
Getting a calendar and writing down all appointments and deadlines can help you a great deal. Keep up with your calendar and keep your schedule light. Looking at empty calendar spaces can make you feel relaxed.
You are not expected to be perfect at everything you do. All humans do something wrong sometimes. That's evident if you watch outtakes of a TV show.
Take the first step. Schedule an amount of time to work on something every day, and you will be amazed at how quickly it gets done. Reward yourself and anticipate that reward as an incentive to work. You will feel motivated to keep on working.
Allow adequate time to complete your task and don't panic if you fall behind. Be flexible. You might want to avoid extensions. It's hard to work on a project if you feel nobody else but you can work at it. All good leaders do well if they allow others to get involved, and when all fails, they always have another ace up their sleeve.
