Things to Know About a Doctorate or Masters in Social Work

Masters in Social Work

The beauty of the social work field is that there are several degrees open for it that may correspond to your specific needs. Basically, a Masters in Social Work is an initial professional degree that prepares students for a career in social work. Should the student desire a more theory and analysis-focused study, the doctorate awaits.

The masters class is intended to help students learn more about various policy trends and styles in social work. You can expect to finish in about 2 years. There are a great many scholarships being given for this particular academic option.

A Master's in Social Work requires a lot of field experience from the student. Social workers are going to be asked to deal with campaigns, organize and manage them, and possibly even evaluate them later for the agency funding them. You may choose a particular concentration for your studies to help sharpen your skills towards a goal.

You can find a number of concentrations in this course, from methodology down to health care. The most common workplaces for people from the degree would be governmental agencies and non-profits. A lot of people end up going for a double-degree.

Social Work courses can be accredited by the CSWE. Those who go to CSWE-accredited schools have good chances of going on to doctorates. The beauty of it is that you have the option to complete the course more quickly.

The doctorate is meant to be an extended study course, a way of providing people with even more specialized and complex tools for social work and its evaluation. While you shall hear some institutions referring to the course as that for a PhD, you shall also hear others referring to it as a doctorate course. Do not be confused into thinking they stand for different types of programs, however.

Most graduates of doctorates go into the academe. Because this is a research-focused life, the center of your world is going to be in analytical papers and publications, and not in the people actually being written about in those same publications. The doctoral enables you to draw attention to yourself as a major thinker and analyst in the field.

This advanced program is very focused on research and analytical work. You shall need to produce a dissertation to complete the program. This is a huge body of research of your own doing that is going to take up a great deal of your time.

Both the PhD and the masters degree you need to get to it shall require more than a few years of your life. While many professionals have their primary focus on teaching and collaboration on research with academic colleagues, many still continue their social work practice. It is going to be tough, but you can do both if you know how to balance priorities.

Compared to a masters in social work, the CSWE does not accredit doctoral degrees in social work. Those short on funds shall have to reconsider a doctorate program application because it does not usually have any scholarship offers. In addition, applicants are expected to have not only significant work experience in social work but also a strong academic background as well.
