Unless you live off a trust fund, you are possibly a busy person who keeps getting busier. Work, family, school, and other commitments just eat the day away and leave you with no time to sit back and relax. So what's to do if one needs some rest and relaxation? With that in mind, you will want to get enough rest as part of your healthy living regimen, as an adequate amount of rest would protect your immune system and act as a preventative measure against illnesses and diseases.
Not Getting Enough Rest - What's In It For You
Strangely, not too many people are aware that the body needs enough rest in order to run smoothly. We would stay on the safe side and go with the generally accepted seven to eight hours of sleep per day in order for the body to have enough in it to keep up with the demands of modern living, although this figure may not be the same for all adults. It is a sad reality, though, that many individuals do not see things that way, preferring to sleep for a shorter time than they should in order to cram more activities into their schedule. Unfortunately, this runs the body down allowing more viruses and diseases to attack the body because the immune system is not functioning as well as it should. This harms more than as it helps, as one could miss a significant time at work (and a significant amount of pay) due to these aches and pains. So to avoid filing for sick leave and being laid up in bed with nothing productive to do except read the morning paper, you will want to get enough sleep to keep your immune system strong and effective against viruses.
Also, when you don't get enough rest you have difficulty concentrating, thinking clearly, and even remembering things. You might not notice this at first or blame it on your busy schedule, but the more sleep and rest you miss out on the more pronounced these symptoms will become.
In addition, a lack of rest and relaxation can really work a number on your mood. It is a scientific fact that when individuals miss out on good nightly rest their personality is affected and they are generally more grumpy, less patient, and snap easier. You don't want to be notorious among your circle of friends, or especially your family, as that person who snarls "what's so good about the morning" when greeted with a cheerful "good morning!" to start the day.
So, the next time you think it is a good idea to stay up late to complete a task or hang out with friends, think again. It is true that one night of hard work or partying will not send you to an early grave, but several nights on end of not getting enough rest just might.
